The way to do this is actually really simple! I'm not sure why it was overlooked.
If you get a ????? (hex:FF) via the bad clone trick (by putting a 00 into daycare and out again), switch it to the top of the party and then let every Pokémon in battle faint, then you'll get whited out and return to the last Pokémon Center/your room as usual, but due to the nature of ????? (0xFF) the game doesn't heal ????? and any of the Pokémon below it (like what happens when you try to use the Pokémon Center manually). You can easily beat the Elite Four this way, e.g. by whiting out and returning to the Pokémon League's Pokémon Center because of G/S/C's automatic end battle sequence if you try to enter a battle with no usable Pokémon, which means you can simply just talk to all the Elite Four members (and Lance) to skip to the Hall of Fame.

Is there any reason why this would be limited to the Elite Four? If not, then this would be good for speedruns.

No, you should be able to playthrough the whole game like this I think? I hadn't realised it could be done with the guard glitch though Nice find, Torchickens!

No need to give me credit. Yeah, you should be able to do this with every wild and trainer (perhaps excluding the DUDE's demonstration?) but in order to play through the whole game, you would still need access to HM moves e.g. Waterfall unless you use further glitches. According to Paco81, in Pokémon Crystal simply viewing the status of a ????? (000) has the potential of corrupting the map, though in order to explore further you may (unfortunately) require those HM moves anyway? Wersterlobe and RR (as posted elsewhere on the forums) found a similar method of map corruption, though unfortunately as far as I'm aware whilst withdrawing 20-30 Pokémon worked to corrupt the map and potentially do things like bypass the Magnet Train without a Pass, or Snorlax on an emulated Pokémon Gold/Silver, this method of map corruption always freezes the game when you withdraw that many Pokémon on Pokémon Crystal.
