This isn't a glitch, but it's interesting nonetheless. Pokémon Crystal has an unused border for Super Game Boy. You can see it here. It's nothing really special, though. It's just the border used in the Japanese version of Gold, so it appears to just be a leftover feature that was dummied out. I'm curious to why international versions, such as English, still have the Japanese Gold border. Apparently the Japanese Crystal was based off Gold's coding, and the English Crystal, in turn, was based off the coding of the Japanese Crystal as opposed to English Gold? In any case, you can never see the border normally because the SGB flag is disabled (not that seeing it would do much, as the game doesn't run on the Super Game Boy anyway). If you really want to see it, just enable the SGB flag by setting offset 0x146 to 03 and change the checksum byte by subtracting 03 from offset 0x14D (so for example, in the English version, this would change from 26 to 23). But anyway, it's evident that this was just a leftover feature, as opposed to being something that was intended to be used. (It's different from the case with Telefang, another (very underrated) GBC game with unused Super Game Boy borders, where in that case they were intended to be used but were dummied out for some unexplainable reason. But hey, I'm getting a bit off topic here.) Also, it's interesting that in Crystal, the message saying it can only be used on a GBC has a predefined color palette too (with the bronze tint). I wonder if this was a leftover feature too?

Apparently the Japanese Crystal was based off Gold's coding, and the English Crystal, in turn, was based off the coding of the Japanese Crystal as opposed to English Gold? Makes sense to me. It would probably be easier to merge the changes from Gold‐J to Gold‐U into Crystal‐J than to merge the changes from Gold‐J to Crystal‐J into Gold‐U. Also, it's interesting that in Crystal, the message saying it can only be used on a GBC has a predefined color palette too (with the bronze tint). I wonder if this was a leftover feature too? Seems like this might have been intentional and just left out. Guess: they probably didn’t want to bother removing the code for the SGB border, and they didn’t want to bother making a Crystal SGB border, so they just disabled the SGB flag in the header to remove it, with the effect of also disabling the error message palette. Yes, Telefang is way cool.
