Is it possible that the outcome of metronome would be metronome? If so, then you could theortically have an infinite chain of metronomes if you have some crazy luck.

According to Bulbapedia, Metronome will never choose itself. There are other moves Metronome never chooses (such as Sketch or Struggle), too. Starting with Generation 3, Metronome never selects another move its user knows. Starting with Generation 5, Metronome will not select Transform or some legendaries' signature moves. Funny that. In Generation 1, any wild Pokemon that transforms becomes a Ditto in the game's engine. The only other Pokemon that can use this move is Mew, but you're not supposed to (hint hint) find it in the wild. If a wild Pokemon were to Metronome a Transform, then, it permanently becomes a Ditto. Also, in Generation 2, if a transformed Ditto (or any Pokemon that Metronomes Transform) uses Sketch to copy a move, the copy is permanent. You could conceivably use Metronome to Transform into an opponent's Smeargle (not a wild one, because those only know Sketch, and Sketch can't Sketch Sketch) and theoretically cause the Metronoming Pokemon to learn any technique (including Metronome or Transform itself, if you'd like). Good luck with that. They fixed this in Generation 2, but Transform has always been a generally odd move. Even in Generation 4 there are glitches with Transform. See Rage behavior glitch for an example. Oh, and in the Japanese versions only, if you Mimic Transform you get to keep your new moveset (unfortunately, because Metronome can't choose Mimic, you can't Metronome your way into this). Fun! Generally these moves (Metronome, Sketch, Mimic, Transform) seem to interact with each other in very odd ways. Might be the reason you can't Metronome Transform in Generation 5. So no - Metronome can't Metronome itself, Transform can't transform into a transformed Pokemon, and Sketch can't Sketch itself. Aside from that, these three are rather odd moves.
