Hyper Beam actually just needs to KO the opponent; not necessarily take it out in one hit.

Yes, sorry. That was what I was trying to say, but for some reason I took a particularly long time trying to describe it. Looks like I got a little carried away with "knocked out in one hit". :-/

Quote:
In Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver, the Battle Tower starts from scratch after 1792 consecutive wins. When Palmer is fought for the third and fourth times in the streak, though, a normal trainer will appear with no message, and a battle will begin against Palmer. Only 7 BP will be received, however.

Really? That's interesting. I heard about the Battle Tower starting from scratch after that many wins before (is it based on there only being (1792?) different rosters in the Battle Tower?), though I had no idea the "Palmer wannabe" would start appearing then.

Quote:

In Diamond/Pearl, if one selects "Rest" before battling Palmer and doesn't save and turn off the game, a normal trainer will appear instead of Palmer, and Palmer will be fought but with no 20 BP reward (not sure how much.)

I made a Wiki article about this called "Battle Tower event skip" based on a Youtube video by DrDimentio who ran into this glitch by accident. You receive the normal 4+ battle points instead of 20 and the speech this normal trainer says is unused I think. "Now come! Show me, the Tower Tycoon what you're really made of!"

Is the glitch you mentioned above (consecutive wins for 3rd and 4th Palmer) exploitable to battle him again (with no message?) on Diamond/Pearl?

There are 700 total movesets after battle 49 which are randomly selected, not more than one of the same Pokémon appearing in one team (that's the limit of randomness, though; I faced two Metagross 3 leads in a row just today.) Also, there are 100 trainers above battle 49. So, I don't think it has to do with running out of anything.

On DP, one would probably have to hack. The record in the DP BT is 595, as opposed to PtHGSS's 2366 and counting. It hasn't been found whether/when it happens.

Random fact about the Hyper Beam thing: Even though it is well known that the user doesn't have to recharge upon knocking out an opponent in the Game Boy games, most people don't know that it's also true in the original Japanese Pokémon Stadium (the one that was never released elsewhere).

See this video starting from around 1:25:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zv5R9YOUw8o

So the second Stadium game (first for the rest of the world) was the first game to fix the bug.

Can you link battle on Stadium? What if a person with a japanese version of the game played a non-japanese version?

You can battle on Stadium, but you need at least one Transfer Pak (two would be more convenient, but only one is truly necessary as the games let you save teams). And as far as I know, prior to Generation III, Japanese versions of any Pokémon games are not compatible with international (English, etc.) versions because of different character sets (kana vs. letters) and different character limits for trainer names and nicknames (5 for both in Japanese, 7 for trainer names and 10 for nicknames in international versions).

I wanted to post about the battle tower thing. It happens to be the 256 set of values, being the hex FF and the last 2 bit value. It makes sense as a reset point.

Can you clarify please? By "last 2 bit value" it makes me think of 2^2, which is just 04.

In other news, an old Dive glitch which works in the English Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was recently uploaded by Cat333Pokemon who says he recorded the footage live in November 14-16 2009 with the help of 'warriorsrussetfur123' who told him about the glitch.

Edit: Another video of the glitch, though with poor quality pre-dates November 2009, uploaded by ehren00uchiha in May 22.

It involves entering a door underwater and pressing B before the map changes, such that you can get the 'would you like to resurface?' message whilst on the door/exit tile and select Yes to resurface to the wrong places. If you resurface on a sea boulder it is very possible to simply walk off it and walk on water.

There have been past glitches allowing you to walk on water in Generation III, but this is the (first?) which works internationally? For example, a (derivative?) of the so called 'Mail Trick glitch' from 0xwas, which initially involves having an enemy Pokémon Trick away your mail (but you still keep it). Combining this allows you to discard multiple mail at once, though this only works in Japanese Ruby/Sapphire.

VaeporSage from the Hall of Origin forums has found that it also works in other underwater areas where resurfacing is normally impossible, like one of the abandoned ship doors because they don't have the 'cannot resurface' flag by default. Choosing 'No' also makes the player move up one tile (if you save the game and reset afterwards), consequently allowing you to resurface to another unintended area.

Cool, that first glitch works even when I play it in Spanish, so I guess that it does work internationally.

I also got it to work in Sapphire as well (though the above screenshots are from Emerald).

Last 2-bit value, so:
0-F is one bit
10-FF would be two bits, and so on.
Nice observation, too. I'll post this on Smogon.

I think I understand now thanks! 1792/256 = 7.

Is there an 8-bit (normal FF, 256 value) byte defining the list of possible trainers which value cycles to its next bit every 256 trainers?

Like this?:

Trainer count 'cycles'List of Trainers to select from byte (binary switches)
[1] (Opponent 0 to 255)2^1 (Use list 1 [includes Tower Tycoon] )
[2] (Opponent 256 to 511)2^2 (Use list 2)
[3] (Opponent 512 to 767)2^3 (Use list 3)
[4] (Opponent 768 to 1023)2^4 (Use list 4)
[5] (Trainers 1024 to 1279)2^5 (Use list 5)
[6] (Opponent 1280 to 1535)2^6 (Use list 6)
[7] (Opponent 1536 to 1791)2^7 (Use list 7)

When the byte progresses to 2^8 (value 00) and trainer 1792 is reached, it rounds up to use the closest flag 0x02 2^1, maybe? so you get the initial list of Trainers again including the Tower Tycoon?

That would make sense, though the selections don't keep changing after 256 battles. From what I know, it's closer to this around the start (this is mostly original research, as BT players generally completely disregard the first 49 battles):
Battles 1-14: List 1
Battles 15-20: List 2 (First stage NFEs never appear here)
Battle 21: Palmer
Battles 22-42: List 3 (Pokémon are mostly fully evolved IIRC)
Battles 43-48: List 4 (I've never seen any Gastrodon set before battle 43)
Battles 49-1792: List 5 (As has been proven)
EDIT: Also, it wouldn't really make too much sense to switch "lists" mid-round (so, not at a multiple of 7.)

I think I've found a glitch.

In Pokemon Gold, when I arrived in Cherrygrove City, there was that old man who's by the Route 29 entrance. I went to his left to talk to him. After selecting YES for his 'do you want me to show you around' speech, he walked right through me to show me around.
